What is Wax Carving?
Well, have you ever wanted to cast your own designs in metal, like silver, gold or bronze? And have someone else make dozens or hundreds of copies for you? Then you need lost wax casting, and carving a wax model is how your prepare your piece for casting.
A wax carver takes your sketch and translates it into a 3D model of your design, whether by carving or building up specialty jewelry waxes. We're called wax carvers, modelmakers and even waxsmiths. Since the first metal prototype will be cast directly form the wax model, it has to be just right. Any flaws in the wax will reproduce themselves in the casting. Wax is versatile and lets you create very sculptural designs, like flowers, faces, snakes, etc. A lot of the jewelry you see for sale actually starts as a wax model.
Clients typically are looking for a way to make their jewelry stand apart from the masses, with some original components, like clasps, or logo tags. Lost wax casting is a great technique for making original and interesting jewelry components. Lots of jewelers use it to produce their own designs. The best part is you can use your original model to subcontract some of the work for your jewelry by having a caster cast and polish your pieces for you.
The process is simple. In a nutshell, you create a wax model of your design. That wax model is set inside a steel flask and covered with plaster investment, leaving a funnel and tunnel to reach the wax through the hardened plaster. The flask is put into a kiln and the wax is "lost" as it's burned out of the flask. The flask is placed in a casting machine and the void left behind in the plaster is filled with molten metal.
As a designer, you don't even have to touch a wax or cast your own work. Most jewelers send their waxes to be reproduced by a caster - a dedicated subcontractor who can mold, cast and polish your work for you. Joe Silvera.
